A hobby website with 200 daily visitors received a $104,000 bill.

In February 2024, bots repeatedly downloaded a single 3 MB audio file from a website on Netlify’s free plan. Four days later, the owner faced a $104,500 bill for data transfer, despite usually getting just 200 visitors a day. Support initially offered a discount. Netlify waived the bill after the owner’s Reddit post attracted widespread attention.

Why this happens: A free hosting plan does not always include a hard spending limit. Automated requests can generate billable traffic, so check how your provider handles excess usage and which limits you can set.

A researcher checked 1,645 Lovable apps. 170 exposed customer data.

In 2025, a security researcher examined apps built with Lovable. Around one in ten exposed database records, potentially including names, email addresses, passwords and payment details. The vulnerability was assigned a CVE identifier.

Why this happens: Logging in is only part of protecting customer data. Access rules must also limit which records each user can read or change. Without those checks, one customer may be able to access another’s information.

German online shops faced €1,000 demands over accessibility.

New accessibility requirements took effect in Germany on 28 June 2025. Within weeks, the Händlerbund trade association reported legal demands against online shops, with costs of around €1,000 per case. Depending on the violation, fines can reach €100,000. Exemptions apply, including for some small service providers.

Why this happens: If accessibility requirements apply to your shop, customers need to be able to use it with assistive technology. Testing keyboard navigation and screen reader support helps identify barriers in the checkout process.
